Game of Thrones: what are the future series derived from the universe of George RR Martin?

Three years after its last episode, Game Of Thrones is still and always an extremely popular series. And the HBO channel has every intention of capitalizing on this enthusiasm and on the rich and exciting universe created by George RR Martin in 1996.

While the first season of House of the Dragon just ended on OCS, many other spin-off series are in development. We offer you this little recap to find out where future escapades in Westeros will take you… and beyond.

The series is adapted from the novel Fire and Blood by George RR Martin, published in 2019, which immerses the reader in the heart of the history of the Targaryen family, from which Daenerys comes. As a reminder, the Targaryens are known to ride dragons and preserve a pure lineage by intermarrying between siblings.

House of the Dragon takes place 172 years before the events of Game Of Thronesand deals with the most dramatic chapter of this period: the Dance of the Dragons, and the civil war of the Targaryens. Fire and Blood incorporates many other families from Westeros, including Houses Stark and Lannister, and the ancestors of popular characters such as Ned, Arya, Cersei, and Tyrion.

The first season, which aired from August 21 on the OCS streaming platform, is a public and critical success. The series is co-created by Ryan J. Condal (colony) and George RR Martin himself, and was able to count on a great cast: Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Rhys Ifans, Emma d’Arcy…

Jon Snow

This is the latest news from the world of George RR Martin: HBO is said to be developing a series centered on Jon Snow, and which will begin following the events of Game Of Thrones. Kit Harington would return in the lead role.

As a reminder, at the end of the eighth and final season of the show, Jon Snow – real name Aegon Targaryen – was a potential heir to the Iron Throne, but he chose exile beyond the Wall. This series could therefore teach us more about its future, and allow us to find certain characters, like Arya or the Sauvageons…

This series is still in the development stage.

This project will be the adaptation of the book series Tales of Dunk & Egg (The Adventures of Dunk and the Egg en VF) written by George RR Martin, short novels that focus on the characters of Ser Duncan the Great, aka Dunk, and his young squire, Aegon Targaryen, nicknamed the Egg, who would later become King Aegon V. The events of these books take place 90 years before the events of Game Of Thrones.

These stories follow the character duo through more modest adventures than those of Game Of Thrones, alongside the large-scale conflicts of Westeros. Such a project could be related to the series The Mandalorianwhich allows us to discover the universe of Star Wars on a smaller scale, but no less interesting.

The series is directed by Steven Conrad (Patriot), and the first season will adapt the first book, The Errant Knight. The series currently consists of three novels — The Errant Knight, The Liege Sword and The Dragon Egg — but Martin plans to finalize at least six.

The future of Game Of Thrones will not be exclusively live action. Sources say HBO is preparing at least two animated series about the world of George RR Martin.

One of the two projects will focus on the Golden Empire of Yi Ti, a territory located in the Overseas East, at the far east of Essos. Due to its remoteness from Westeros, this region is considered almost mythical, but it is reported to be a mecca for the trade of fabrics and spices.

This extremely advanced multi-millennial empire, inspired by imperial China, has experienced many periods of conflict and open warfare in the world of George RR Martin. The opportunity to broaden the horizons of Game Of Thrones.

The other anime projects are still very secret and less detailed, and we just know that one of them should be a dark and serious drama, in the same tone as Game Of Thrones.

The Sea Snake

Also in development, this spin-off series is centered around the character of Corlys Velaryon, played by Steve Toussaint in House of the Dragon.

Nicknamed The Sea Snake, the character has exciting potential as he has traveled with his boats farther than anyone in the entire universe of Game Of Thrones. The series would thus allow to discover more on the continent of Essos, located southeast of Westeros, and even to the distant lands of Yi Ti.

The Sea Snakelong titled “Nine Voyages” (“Nine Voyages” in VF), is currently in development by Bruno Heller (Rome, Gotham). Recent rumors point to the project being canceled by HBO, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

It is one of the most ambitious spin-offs of Game Of Thrones in development : 10,000 Ships (10,000 ships en VF) will tell the story of Princess Nymeria, 1000 years before the events of the original series.

Fleeing from the dragons of Valyria, Nymeria led her people away from her homeland of Essos aboard 10,000 ships. Her journey took her to Dorne, south of Westeros, where she married Lord Mors Martell. This union led to the creation of the Martell house, of which Oberyn (Pedro Pascal) is the descendant in Game Of Thrones. Nymeria is an important character in the universe Game Of Thronesand Arya Stark will name her wolf after her.

Currently in development, 10,000 Ships is written by Amanda Segal, the screenwriter behind the series Person of Interest, The Good Wife and The Mist. Recent rumors point to the project being canceled by HBO, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Flea Bottom (cancelled)

This series did not go beyond the concept stage, and its development was canceled by HBO in 2021. Its place in this list is for informational purposes.

If the Red Keep, residence of the Targaryens, the Baratheons and the Lannisters, is naturally a central place in Westeros and its capital Port-Réal, a series on an unknown district of the city has so far been in preparation: Flea Bottom (Culpucier in VF).

Flea Bottom is one of the poorest neighborhoods of Port-Réal, home to destitute markets, brigands, brothels with their prostitutes, and even the “little birds” of Varys. A pile of decrepit houses, countless narrow streets and shady places where another power than that of the Red Keep lives, but no less important.

Famous people like Davos Mervault or Gendry Baratheon lived there for many years, and it would have been a new opportunity to show another side of Westeros, its capital and its people. The series project has officially been cancelled.

What other series to see on OCS?

Whether Game Of Thrones and House of the Dragon are still available in full on OCS, other enticing programs can be found on the streaming platform. The Walking Dead, Westworld, The Handmaid’s Tale or Succession are in particular sure values, just like the magnificent shows Euphoria and Chernobyl.
