It only took a few days for Nintendo to put an end to the activities of the Yuzu emulator. The Tropic Haze company settled the conflict amicably, by killing Yuzu, and paying no less than 2.4 million dollars to the Japanese giant.
A few days ago, Nintendo accused the creators of Switch emulators (and in particular Yuzu) of “ hacking on a colossal scale “. The Japanese giant then took the example of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, whose illegal downloads exceeded one million. And faced with pressure from Nintendo, Yuzu has already given in.
End of game for Yuzu
It was in May 2023, a few days before the launch of the new Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a Nintendo Switch emulator, namely Yuzu, was the joy of many players. The latter indeed made it possible to enjoy the upcoming game in advance, and in sometimes (much) better conditions than on the official Nintendo console.
An unbearable situation for Nintendo, which attacked Tropic Haze (the company behind Yuzu) at the end of February. A few days later, Tropic Haze agreed to settle the matter out of court. This results in an immediate cessation of Yuzu’s development, not to mention $2.4 million in damages.
Other Nintendo Switch emulators not worried (for the moment?)
Tropic Haze and Nintendo have notably agreed that the company prohibits any distribution of a compiled version or the source code of the Yuzu emulator.
The agreement also includes the cessation of all forms of development, the scrapping of the website, the deletion of lines of code and other files used to design Yuzu, and the dissolution of the Discord. Everything must therefore disappear.
According to some reports, the development team managed to rake in a little less than €30,000 each month, notably through Patreon, not counting some transactions made on Discord. So many elements that would have ignited the powder at Nintendo, not to mention the fact that Switch emulators often allow you to go well beyond the technical capabilities of the original console.
Note that other Nintendo Switch emulators, such as Ryujinx or Skyline, do not seem to be affected at the moment. The same goes for Dolphin, the famous GameCube/Wii emulator.
