Gamescom will also take place digitally in 2021 due to the corona pandemic. There were already some highlights to see at the opening.

As in the previous year, Gamescom can only take place digitally due to the corona pandemic. On Wednesday evening, the world’s largest video game fair was officially opened with the “Opening Night Live”. Moderator and video game journalist Geoff Keighley presented numerous news about previously announced and newly introduced games. Here are some of the highlights from the opening.

“Saints Row”

At the beginning of the show, a new game from the “Saints Row” universe was announced – a complete restart of the well-known open-world action series. The reboot, which will simply be called “Saints Row”, is due to be released on February 25, 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S. As the future boss of “The Saints”, players take on several other gangs. In addition to all the action, the humor should not be neglected either.

“Marvel’s Midnight Suns”

“Marvel’s Midnight Suns” is a new tactical role-playing game from the “XCOM” and “Civilization” makers. Gamers join forces with the eponymous Midnight Suns, the earth’s last line of defense against the underworld. The game will also feature a collection of heroes of the Avengers, X-Men and Runaways. The release is planned for March 2022 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S and Nintendo Switch.

“Call of Duty: Vanguard”

During the opening, gameplay material for the “Call of Duty: Vanguard” campaign was shown for the first time. It was announced about a week ago that it would be released on November 5th on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S became. “Vanguard” is set in World War II. In addition to a single player campaign, there will of course also be a rich multiplayer offer. At the start there should already be 20 maps, including a zombie mode.

“Halo Infinite”

With “Halo Infinite” the new part of the popular “Halo” series will be released on December 8, 2021 for PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X / S. That was also announced in the course of the “Opening Night Live”. Microsoft promises the most extensive campaign to date around the Master Chief. For the 20th anniversary of the series, there will also be an Xbox Series X in “Halo” design, which should be available from mid-November.

“Far Cry 6”

The “Far Cry” series is particularly known for its iconic antagonists. The main focus of a new trailer for “Far Cry 6” is the villain Antón Castillo, played by “Breaking Bad” star Giancarlo Esposito (63). From October 7th on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S and Stadia, players will lead a revolution against the tyrant in open-world action in the Caribbean paradise of Yara.

“Horizon Forbidden West”

A bit of a disappointment for video game fans was news about “Horizon Forbidden West”. Although the post-apocalyptic adventure of the young heroine Aloy for PS4 and PS5 is eagerly awaited in many places, the game will no longer appear as hoped in 2021. Among other things, challenges in connection with the corona pandemic are to blame for this, explained Game Director Mathijs de Jonge. The publication is now due for February 18, 2022.
