Time passes and so do the ambitions of manufacturers. This is evidenced by the move by Sony, which is undoubtedly ready to move up a gear regarding its presence on the mobile market.

A mobile gaming ecosystem in sight for Sony and PlayStation

This was one of Sony’s ambitions: to establish itself in the service games market, video games regularly supplied with content to retain a player base. Despite the irrefutable success of Helldivers 2, Sony seems to be backtracking on this strategy: game service The Last of Us canceled, Destiny in difficulty… Their eyes now seem to be turning towards another market: that of mobile games. As evidenced by the job offer found on their site:

PlayStation Studios Mobile is seeking an experienced software engineer to design the PlayStation platform for developing, publishing and operating free-to-play mobile games. The person in this position will spearhead the design and implementation of this platform.

The job description also mentions that the recruited person will work with internal teams to link these mobile games to the services offered by PlayStation while guaranteeing their “PlayStation quality”.

Being increasingly “mobile”: the future of video games?

An idea which must have been present for several years in the minds of Sony Interactive Entertainment which must have been pushed by a recent success: that of the PlayStation Portal, the portable console allowing remote reading (provided you have a good connection internet) the games from the library of your PS5. According to Hiromi Wakai, vice president of product sales for Sony America, the demand for this console exceeded all the company’s expectations.

Something surprising given its concept far from its market competitors such as the Nintendo Switch, the ROG Ally or the Steam Deck.

A success which therefore makes Sony want to believe in streaming gaming and perhaps to have this approach concerning other products in the future. Enough to get closer to the strategy of another competitor, Xbox, which has been eyeing the mobile market for a long time. And actions are joined to the words since Sarah Bond, president of Xbox, formalized the arrival of a mobile store branded Xbox Gaming Store. Enough to follow with interest the strategies of two major video game manufacturers.
