During the whole weekend and until Monday, the ambassadors of the 27 worked hard on the emergency plan proposed by the Commission, before the energy ministers met on Tuesday for an extraordinary Council under the Czech Presidency. Wishing to anticipate a total shutdown of Gazprom’s tap next autumn, the European Commission proposed, last Wednesday, to reduce gas consumption by 15% over the next eight months on a voluntary basis. In the event of serious shortages, a European alert system would make the system “binding”.
