Gasoline is more expensive than it has been for a long time: when to fill up before Pentecost

The price of fuel rises and rises. Drivers currently have to pay almost 1.50 euros for the liter E10. In November 2020, the price was a mere 1.23 euros. And there are similar tendencies with diesel, too, with an average price of 1.33 euros per liter. In the Corona year 2020, the price per liter even slipped to one euro per liter. At times, diesel was even available at a junk price of 99 cents. But why is fuel so expensive now?

Normal development – or is there a crisis in the oil market?

For the ADAC, the current development is no surprise. “After the corona-related crash in the previous year, the oil price has gradually risen to the old level. In addition, the value added tax was raised to the well-known 19 percent on January 1st and a CO2 tax on fuels was introduced at the turn of the year,” explains the automobile club .

The development is completely realistic and cannot be attributed to extreme situations such as a possible crisis on the oil market.

Do drivers have to expect the next price shock?

The good news first: With the approaching Whitsun holidays, the ADAC does not expect a price surge.

This can be determined from two situations. On the one hand, due to the corona, the travel wave will probably also be canceled this year on Whitsun. On the other hand, there has been no significant increase in the oil price. If the price on the oil market rises, drivers will feel the aftermath a few weeks later.

However, the following also applies: In the summer, petrol station prices could then rise. With the increasing number of vaccinations, the desire to travel also increases.

When should I go to the gas station on Pentecost?

A look at the previous years shows: Anyone planning a short trip by car or wanting to fill up their car should generally drive to the petrol station between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., fuel prices usually rise for a short time because of the large number of commuters.

Do you want to go to the petrol station before you start your journey: In the morning it is most expensive at the petrol pump. ADAC evaluations show that at 7 a.m., drivers paid just over 7 cents more for the liter of E10, from 9 p.m. the liter was four cents cheaper.

Last-minute fuel tankers should know: The best time on the weekend of Pentecost to refuel might be on Saturday between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.

In addition to a variety of fuel apps that show the average price and evaluate the regional price, drivers can also use the Google Maps map app.

Since autumn 2020, the petrol prices for selected petrol stations have also been available there. Specifically, Google shows the current fuel price for Super, Super E10 and Diesel. All you have to do is enter “petrol station” in the search bar. If the price is recorded, an orange symbol appears in the listing.

The ADAC fuel price app or providers such as Clever-Tanken and Mehr Tanken also determine the prices of the petrol stations in your area. Our colleagues from CHIP took a closer look at the various offers. You can find the result here

Mineral oil companies generally set a particularly high price in the morning hours. This then decreases continuously over the course of the day.

What about the traffic jam on Whitsun?

Due to the ongoing restrictions in public life, many consumers will probably refrain from planning major vacation at Pentecost. A wave of travel seems unlikely. However, the focus is probably on camping trips, train journeys and smaller city trips in the area around the place of residence. Also could with good Weather there are also many motorcyclists on the road.

Drivers must expect increased traffic from Friday afternoon, early Friday evening, Saturday morning and Monday afternoon. “If the weather is nice, there will be delays caused by day trippers on the arterial roads from the cities to the local recreation areas on Saturday, Sunday and Monday,” emphasizes the ADAC.

The risk of congestion is particularly high on permanent construction sites, of which there are currently more than 800. Drivers should clearly apply the brakes in the construction site areas and drive with foresight. Tempo 80 applies in many construction site areas and even tempo 60 on building site driveways.
