“GAU” is getting closer: rescuer Baumgart gets into heavy seas with the HSV

“Super-GAU” is getting closer
Rescuer Baumgart gets into heavy seas with the HSV

At Hamburger SV, the long-awaited promotion is once again in danger, coach Steffen Baumgart and Co. are the big losers of the Easter weekend. Even if you no longer have it in your own hands, of course you can’t give up at HSV.

Steffen Baumgart frowned and looked around stressed, he was “dissatisfied”. Of course he was. “If we want to get to the top, we have to win games,” said the angry Baumgart, but the coach and his HSV were the big losers of the Easter weekend. Because: The traditional club, which had been dreaming of promotion to the Bundesliga for so long, slipped to fourth place.

“Is it just a matter of relegation?” asked the “Hamburger Abendblatt” after the bitter 1:1 (0:0) at SpVgg Greuther Fürth. And the “Hamburger Morgenpost” wrote: “The disaster in the promotion battle is getting closer and closer for HSV.” Baumgart was actually brought in as Tim Walter’s successor precisely to prevent the catastrophe. But while the competitors St. Pauli, Kiel, Düsseldorf and Hanover all had something to celebrate at Easter, things are anything but smooth at HSV even under the 52-year-old. Baumgart’s record so far is just mediocre: two wins, one draw and two defeats.

“If you don’t make it 2-0…”

“I saw a game that we could have won – perhaps even should have won – because of our many opportunities,” said Baumgart and struggled with his team’s use of opportunities, which had to do without number one attacker Robert Glatzel at short notice: “If you do that But if you don’t make it 2-0, the opponent stays in the game. So we only get one point, we have to live with that. We’ll see what this result is good for at the end of the season.”

Hamburg had more ball possession and shots on goal in the first half, but Fürth had the better chances. Armindo Sieb (7th) and Lukas Petkov (16th) were each invited by the Hanseatic League to make mistakes and were unable to take the lead. Hamburg became more dangerous in the second half. András Németh (48th), who represented Glatzel, put the ball sharply at the Fürth goal after a counterattack initiated by Immanuel Pherai. U21 national goalkeeper Jonas Urbig just steered the shot over the crossbar. “He’s a young striker,” said Baumgart. “I think he did well. We would have been happy if he had scored a goal.” Bakery Jatta (53′) hit the post with his header – Urbig would not have been able to get to the ball again.

Direct promotion already gone?

Hamburg’s pressure continued to increase and gave them the deserved lead. Laszlo Benes returned a corner to the free-standing Muheim. The defender gave Urbig no chance with his shot from around 25 meters. Muheim scored his fifth goal of the season, making him the most dangerous defender in the league. Nemeth missed the almost certain 2-0 win against Urbig (70th). The penalty followed from Consbruch: his shot from 30 meters hit the corner and resulted in a lucky equalizer. “I think we did very, very well,” said Baumgart. But: “In the end you stand in front of the goal four or five times and don’t do those things.”

HSV is now in danger of losing the relegation place because of the division of points and because Düsseldorf is now one point ahead of Hamburg after their win at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Given that they are seven points behind Kiel and twelve behind St. Pauli, HSV can probably tick off direct promotion.

Even if they no longer have it in their own hands, HSV doesn’t have to give up – but the pressure before Saturday’s game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern does (1 p.m. on Sky and in the live ticker on ntv.de) is big. “We continue to only look at ourselves, not at the other teams, that doesn’t help,” said Muheim: “But it’s clear that we have to analyze things and do them better in order to win games.”
