GB: Republicans campaigning for the abolition of the monarchy

LONDON, Jan. 10 (Reuters) – Britain’s Republican group Republic launched a campaign to end the monarchy on Monday in the run-up to celebrations marking the 70-year reign of 95-year-old Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen Elizabeth, the world’s oldest and longest-reigning monarch, will celebrate her platinum jubilee next month. Buckingham Palace has specified the program of the celebrations which will take place a few months later, in June, for four days.

Taking the opportunity, the Republic movement announced the launch of a campaign to end the monarchy.

“As a boisterous minority will want to celebrate the Queen’s 70th anniversary, we should all start to look to the future. The prospect of King Charles is not cheerful and there is a good democratic alternative,” said Graham Smith, President of Republic.

“It is time to have a serious debate on our constitution, to recognize that Charles is not the best the country has to offer, and that as a nation we are quite capable of choosing our leader. State, ”he added.

Polls indicate majority British support for the monarchy, with the Queen remaining very popular.

But his eldest son and heir to the throne, Charles, is not as unanimous, especially among young Britons, more and more likely to show a Republican fiber, according to polls. (Report Michael Holden; French version Dina Kartit, edited by Jean-Michel Bélot)
