GDC: VR developers now want to focus on Meta Quest 2 and PSVR 2

How is the VR industry developing? This is the question that the GDC tries to answer through an annual survey.. As a reminder, the Game Developers Conference is, as its name suggests, the world’s largest video game conference for our dev friends.

No less than 2,300 respondents took part in the survey entitled “ State of the Game Industry “. This begins by defining the state of play of VR and AR, indicating that she remains still far from exceeding its “niche” status. General interest in virtual reality and augmented reality is down slightlythe survey also counts fewer VR/AR projects than the previous year.

Interest in VR and AR down slightly:

Indeed, in the world of video games, VR headsets are of interest to 23% of participants. VR is gaining some ground in the table, overtaking android of Google. Nevertheless, its interest drops from 24 to 23% compared to the survey of the GDC from last year. Augmented reality also drops by one point and ends up at 12%.

Only 12% and 5% of all respondents say they have an immersive media project in the works.

12% are currently developing for virtual reality, and only 5% for AR. Overall, 38% of all respondents said they had been or would be involved in VR or AR game development.

The Meta Quest 2 is the most popular VR headset, followed by the PlayStation VR 2:

Neither the Pico 4 nor the other VR headsets from the subsidiary of ByteDance do not appear in the rankings. According to GDConly a handful of developers said they develop games for pico.

As you have seen, the Meta Quest 2 remains the most popular headset (39%), the PSVR 2 is highly anticipated (35%), the PCVR is stable, the new Meta Quest Pro mixed reality headset is on par with the HTC Vive, the Valve Index remains in third place, gaining another percentage point from the previous year. On the other hand, the Pico 4 and the other headphones of the brand are rather invisible.

PCVR headsets seem to be getting a little more intriguing for developers than last year. The Valve Index (11%) and HTC Vive (15%) also gain 3 percentage points each from last year’s assessment when it comes to which platform respondents’ next project will be on. spear.

Even the already discontinued Oculus Rift(S) surprisingly holds its own in the top tierlosing only 3 points to reach 10%, which is a pretty good sign for the PCVR world, which we clearly thought was on the decline. The Rift S no longer being manufactured, no developer is likely to specifically target it.

Two VR headsets are currently in the spotlight, and these are unsurprisingly the Meta Quest 2 and the PlayStation VR 2. For the latter, 18% of respondents plan to publish on it, although the Meta Quest 2 do better with its 36%. The mixed reality headset Meta Quest Pro comes in sixth place with 10%.

Outside of VR, in broader video game development, the PC remains the most popular platform, followed by the PS5, Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles.
