GE: Will refurbish a hydroelectric plant in Pakistan

(CercleFinance.com) – GE announced today that it has been selected by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) for the refurbishment of two hydroelectric units (9 and 10) at the Mangla hydroelectric power station in Pakistan.

The scope of work includes the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the two components of the hydro turbine and the generator.

Previously, GE had already been selected for the ongoing refurbishment of six other units (1 to 6) at the same site. The 100 MW units will be replaced by 135 MW units.

Mangla, which has 10 hydroelectric turbines and is one of the largest power stations in the country, is a 50-year-old hydropower station that produces 1 GW of renewable energy for Pakistan. The renovation works will extend the life, efficiency and capacity of the 280 MW hydroelectric plant.

“By replacing units in an existing dam, we can extend the life of a project by another 50 years,” says Pascal Radue, president and CEO of Hydro Solutions, GE.
