The Coalition studio recently announced a new installment in the Gears of War saga, titled Gears of War: E-Day. Contrary to what some might have thought, this is not a spin-off but a new entry in the main series. The Xbox blog provided some additional details to satisfy fans. There is quite a lot of information.

Gears of War E-Day gives info

The Coalition says it is happy with the stories told in Gears of War 4 and 5 and has no plans to abandon them. However, the creation of this new game was an opportunity”too beautiful to be missed“. The development team seeks to recreate and improve on a shooter classic, while revisiting the tone of the first Gears with truly next-generation technology.

Gears of War: E-Day takes place 14 years before the first game, tackling how an ill-prepared Sera responds to a surprise Locust invasion. The developers intentionally redefined Locusts not just as enemies, but as “living nightmares”. The design team prioritized redefining the Locust Drone, which had become a simple basic enemy over the course of the series, into something “fearsome, physically intimidating and absolutely brutall”. The fear of encountering the Locusts for the first time is central to the game, with scenes of desperation like Marcus fighting a Drone for the first time.

The game is also expected to reveal the origins of Lancer, famous for his chainsaw, and follow the early stages of brotherhood between Marcus and Dom, bonding over the loss of Dom’s older brother Carlos, who was close to Marcus. The Coalition promises more than 100 times more environmental and character detail than Gears 5, with advanced technologies like ray-traced lighting, hardware reflections and shadows, next-generation destruction and gore, and cutting-edge animation technology. So much good in perspective. The game is planned for Xbox Series (and probably PC) at a date currently unknown.
