An advertisement that NVIDIA would have done without as it tries to impose the GeForce RTX 4000s against the imminent Radeon RX 7000s.
The question of the melting of the 12VHPWR adapter connector used by NVIDIA and its partners on recent GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards has not finished causing debate.
Two very different adapters
Since the publication of the first pictures on Reddit, our colleague Igor’s Lab decided to get to the bottom of things. The latest advances in his investigation clearly seem to implicate the adapter or, rather, one of the adapters.

It actually happens that, to accompany the GeForce RTX 4090, an adapter is provided. This one is made by Astron or NTK, two Taiwanese brands competing with each other, but not delivering exactly the same product.
According to Igor’s Lab, the adapter produced by NTK has a better locking system once the product is plugged in. Additionally, it uses a single “spring contact” when Astron’s product uses two.

Not (yet) pointing fingers at Astron
Relayed by VideocardzIgor’s Lab continues by explaining that Astron and NTK both use a “tulip” type connector with, however, a notable difference: at NTK, it is necessary to print more force to achieve ” validate » the connection.
Additionally, it would appear that Astron’s wiring is both less durable and has greater electrical resistance than NTK’s. Despite these different elements, Igor’s Lab is careful not to accuse Astron for the moment and emphasizes that reaching a conclusion requires further investigation.
While waiting to be able to bring the long-awaited conclusion, Igor’s Lab takes stock of the problems encountered, the causes considered and what comes closest to a solution. If NVIDIA is also conducting the investigation on its side, the company would have been wise to disseminate this kind of material.
