Could the GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards be affected by a more serious problem than a “simple” poorly designed connector?
It’s been a year since the GeForce RTX 4090 was launched by NVIDIA. A year of talking about his very high level performances. But also for a year the controversy surrounding the melting of its power connector has persisted.
We thought the thing was settled once and for all with the installation of the 12V-2×6 socket to replace the 12VHPWR. A new case of melting seems to call into question the first conclusions.
A “unique” case…
Please note that we are currently only discussing ONE case which is certainly sufficiently “original” for us to mention it, but which cannot on its own enable a new diagnosis to be established.
Reported by the site Techpost which refers to the inevitable Reddit, this is the case of the user Byogore who calls out. Although based in the United States, the latter explains that he purchased a TUF RTX 4090 card from ASUS almost a year ago via the brand’s German store due to a stock shortage.
More annoying than a simple shortage, Byogore therefore indicates having been affected by the “melting” problem without however providing a photo to illustrate the extent of the damage.
… after a year of use
Byogore specifies that the incident occurred during the game of Battlefield 2042. The screen would have gone black – still with sound – then the PC would have simply restarted and Byogore would have felt “ burnt plastic “.
The card would have continued to work – strange all the same to have restarted the PC after such a smell – before crashing again. Byogore explains that ASUS would have been conciliatory after being contacted: he would have had the choice between an exchange for a ROG Strix card (even though he had a TUF) or a refund, knowing that the card was still under warranty.
Such a lapse of time between installing the graphics card and melting the connector is a bad sign. It actually seems difficult to attribute the problem to poor installation or poor connection. The fact remains that it is only a single map and a single testimony: we will see if other cases clarify things.
Let us point out, however, that our own GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition did not seem to pose the slightest problem even though it was used quite a bit and has been used daily since the first days.
