After the feature was announced during the Google I/O 2024the conversational assistant Gemini is finally enriched with an extension allowing music playback directly from YouTube Music.
At the start of the month, Google’s AI was equipped with several features, starting with the integration of numerous services and applications from the American giant (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Maps, YouTube, Google Flights and Hotels). Here we are a few weeks later, and the Mountain View firm is now starting to deploy the YouTube Music extension within its artificial intelligence. Now you can ask Gemini to display, search or play music from the music streaming app.
YouTube Music comes to Google Gemini
In an assistant document freshly unearthed by 9to5Google (and kindly relayed by our colleagues from Neowin), we learn that Google will soon allow Gemini users to connect to the YouTube Music application. For example, it will now be possible to ask Gemini to play a specific title by name and artist, an entire album, a recorded playlist or even a specific musical genre.
For simplicity, Google has listed the prompts you can give Gemini to find and play the music you want to listen to:
- To research [nom de la chanson] by [nom de l’artiste]
- Search album [titre de l’album] of [nom de l’artiste]
- Search for the playlist of [nom de la playlist]
- Find music [genre]
- Search for songs similar to [nom de la chanson] by [nom de l’artiste]
- Find the right song [paroles de la chanson]
- Find the clip of [nom de la chanson]
- Start a radio based on the song [nom de la chanson]
- Search for songs from [nom de l’artiste]
A feature currently being deployed
On iOS, entering a music request triggers the display of a card containing the title, artist, duration and number of plays of the song. On Android, playback takes place in the background, while on iOS, the YouTube Music app opens automatically. For the web version, you will have to click on the map to access the YouTube Music website.
For the moment, the functionality does not yet seem to be available in France, although this should logically not be long. Once this is deployed, all you need to do is ask Gemini to connect to YouTube Music, or go directly to the chatbot settings, “Extensions” section. Google’s AI will then be able to access your YouTube Music data, including saved playlists, history and liked tracks.
