“Generative AI does not hesitate to plagiarize massively”

“Binaire” is a blog hosted by The world, the fruit of the work of a group of friends. To talk about computing, digital technology and science, we look for subjects, then authors. Then we ask the authors to write an article on the chosen topic. This work competes with our other activities: work, pétanque, aperitif, etc.

A lazy idea (the best ideas) would be to ask artificial intelligences (AI) to do the work for us. This would help us find trendy topics and possible authors. But let’s be crazy, why not then place our order: “AI, write us an article for “Binaire” in the style of this or that of our authors, on quantum computing or on the genre of blockchains…”

Let’s quickly recall how these AIs work. We feed gargantuan quantities of text to a deep neural network. From this, he constructs a large model of the language. He can then produce, without understanding anything, the most probable combinations of words based on instructions given to him. Nothing magical, even if the technique is, in reality, a bit more complex. It gives stunning results.

Generative AI therefore works from all the texts with which it has been fed. What’s new ? The writer also draws inspiration from all the texts he has read. In a certain way, he also writes based on a model of language (intuitive) that he constructs from his readings (Simone de Beauvoir, Frédéric Dard, Annie Ernaux, etc.). He also borrows, even if, in his case, we call it inspirations, references, winks, etc.

Basically, what does generative AI change? First, she does not hesitate to plagiarize massively, without obviously having the slightest awareness of doing so. Another difference is that today these AIs are content to generate of the text, without understanding the meaning of what they are saying. But tomorrow ? When they hide their borrowings better, when the “antique” stage of AI has been passed, it will be less easy to highlight a difference.

“Singer” stage

And, if we tolerate such plunder, why bother paying a creator if the AI does the same work at a lower cost? The answer is obvious. Because these AIs only exist by feeding on the creations of humans. Beyond creations in the public domain, living humans are essential for them to talk about current events, adapt to constant developments in the language, and stay “connected”.
