Geneva airspace cut in half following outage caused by thunderstorms

Air traffic control capacity in the Geneva region (western Switzerland) was reduced by half early Wednesday June 26 due to an outage caused by violent storms, announced the company in charge of air traffic control Skyguide.

“Currently, a 50% capacity reduction is in effect in the Geneva region. The situation is constantly monitored and evaluated”Skyguide said in a statement released early Wednesday.

“After a flood in the basement of the Swiss air traffic control center in Geneva, the cooling system was able to be put back into operation after around two hours. The risk of overheating of air traffic control systems is thus avoided”explains a press release released overnight.

Skyguide did not say when the situation might return to normal. For its part, Geneva airport, whose traffic is interrupted at night and resumes at 6 a.m., asked passengers to check if their flight was affected before going to the airport, in a message on X.
