William Shatner is the oldest space tourist in human history. Or as George Takei puts it: a “guinea pig”.
As the loyal helmsman of the USS Enterprise, George Takei (84) alias Mr. Sulu has already flown his Captain Kirk to the edge of the universe and back. At William Shatner’s (90) first real trip into space last Wednesday (October 13), however, Takei was not present. And that was probably better like that: Opposite the US page “Page Six” He was now diligently pulling off the leather and didn’t leave his former “Star Trek” companion and his all-excursion bad.
“He has bravely gone where others have gone before him,” said Takeis sarcastic comment on Shatner’s short flight (about ten minutes) with Jeff Bezos’ (57) space company Blue Origin. The fact that the Kirk actor, at 90 years of age, is the oldest person to have ever left the earth, does not win any admiration from Takei. “He’s a guinea pig at 90 and it’s important to find out what’s going to happen.”
Shatner wept with happiness
Although Shatner only visited space for a few minutes, he was completely enthusiastic after the successful landing: “Everyone has to see it. It was unbelievable and so moving. This experience caused something incredible.” Moved to tears, he thanked Bezos for the unique experience. “What you gave me is the deepest experience ever,” he said. “I’m so touched by what just happened. I hope I never recover from it. I never want to lose that feeling.”
Why Takei’s nasty words? There has been a bitter feud between the two stars for many years. Takei never tires of accusing Shatner of treating him like air on the Star Trek set and even actively sabotaging his career. Shatner shot loud “Today” sharply back and suspected a “psychosis” in Takei. Another sore point between the two Federation fighters: Shatner claimed the only one of the original Enterprise crew not to have been invited to Takei’s 2008 wedding. Complete nonsense, says Takei …
