LEuropean capitals learned with relief of Emmanuel Macron’s victory in the presidential election. It was not when our continent was experiencing the return of war that they were going to welcome with a smile the arrival of a French president without any governmental experience who, moreover, announced that she wanted to upset the functioning of the Union European Union and consider a rapprochement with the Russian aggressor. At a time when Germany hesitates, because of its gas dependence on Russia, and proves incapable of drawing a clear line in this conflict, it would have been catastrophic for France to do the same. The risk was great of a rupture, perhaps fatal, within the EU.
