En France, we nurture a feeling for Russia that is readily made up of admiration for culture, friendship for the people and aspiration for a political understanding, to the point of creating a pro-Russian breeding ground that often surprises foreign observers. “We need to talk to Russia” is easily becoming a refrain on the left as well as on the right and, at the moment, especially at the two extremes of the political spectrum.
