German Film Award 2020: The award ceremony will take place as planned and with a new concept

For a long time it was pending whether and if so how the 70th awarding of the German Film Prize on April 24th could take place. It has now been revealed in the press release that, despite the Corona crisis, the date to date is being maintained. However, the award ceremony will take place "with a completely new concept adapted to the current situation, live at first".

The people in charge are currently working on how exactly this new concept will look "under high pressure". "In coordination with the Minister of State for Culture and the Media, Monika Grütters", the decision had already been made to broadcast the German Film Prize 2020 without a gala, but live on television.

Performance has to be recognized

Ulrich Matthes, President of the German Film Academy, comments on the reasons for this decision: "The outstanding films of the year should also be appropriately recognized in this extraordinary time. The entire team of the German Film Prize faces the challenge of holding the gala despite the current events to make it a glamorous TV evening – for the audience at home and for everyone involved. "

The German Film Award is the most prestigious award in the Federal Republic for German film productions and has been awarded annually since 1951. As a symbol of the award, the Lola statuette for the best works of the past year is presented. In 2019 the musician biography "Gundermann" received the Golden Lola as "Best Film".
