German final against Magdeburg
Füchse Berlin are playing for the European League title

The handball premier title in the European League will go to a German team. After SC Magdeburg, the Füchse Berlin move into the final – and spoil the final for the host Rhein-Neckar Löwen.

The handball Bundesliga clubs Füchse Berlin and SC Magdeburg are playing for the premier title in the European League. The capital club won the second semi-final against hosts Rhein-Neckar Löwen in Mannheim with 35:32 (19:16). Magdeburg had previously prevailed against the Polish representative Wisla Plock with just 30:29 (13:15).

The Berliners were wide awake from the start and benefited from an early phase of weakness of the Lions, who had brought the Swede Kim Ekdahl du Rietz out of retirement after almost a year. After a balanced start phase, the Mannheimers failed to hit a goal for eight minutes, so the Füchse moved away from 4: 3 to 11: 3. The Berliners, who had their best throwers in Lasse Andersson (11 goals), national players Fabian Wiede and Jacob Holm (both 6), benefited from this lead until the end of the game.

For the lions, where coach Martin Schwalb said goodbye at the end of the season without a title, Jerry Tolbring was successful seven times. Magdeburg had considerable trouble against Plock. Coach Bennet Wiegert’s team only took the game 20 minutes before the end and took the lead again for the first time since the 1-0 win. Thanks to the fast combination game and successfully completed counterattacks as well as an increase in defense, the three-time winner of the forerunner competition (EHF Cup) brought victory over time.

“It was a tough game and a tough fight. Now we have a great chance of winning a title and we want to take advantage of this opportunity,” said Wiegert. The best SCM shooters were Omar Magnusson and Michael Damgaard with six hits each.
