From “The Swarm” to two Sisi series to Joko Winterscheidt: These are the winners in the nominations for the German Television Award.

The Nominations for the German Television Prize 2023 have been announced. The jury announced their favorites in the areas of fiction, entertainment and information on Monday (September 11, 2013). All programs that were shown on German television and streaming services between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023 were eligible. The award ceremony will take place on September 27th and 28th in Cologne. Sat.1, the leading broadcaster this year, will broadcast the gala on September 28th.

Among the nominations in the fiction category is “The Swarm,” despite mixed reviews and scolding from the original author Frank Schätzing (66). ZDF’s sci-fi thriller is in the running for best multi-part series. Otherwise, “The Swarm” only managed to get one more nomination, for the music. “Yesterday we were still children” (ZDF) and “Lauchhammer – Tod in der Lausitz” (ARD) are also proposed as multi-part series.

When it comes to TV films, the public broadcasters are also among themselves. “The Mayor” (ZDF), “Ramstein – The Pierced Heart” (ARD) and “As Loud You Can” (ZDF) compete against each other here.

Sisi series: RTL narrowly beats Netflix

However, streaming services performed strongly when it came to series. Netflix was able to place the Sisi series “The Empress” and the spy drama “Kleo” (with Jella Haase, who was nominated for best actress). ZDF completes the field of drama series with “Der Schatten”.

When it comes to comedy series, Netflix is in the running with “King of Stonks”. The financial satire has been nominated a total of five times, including the two main actors Matthias Brandt (61) and Thomas Schubert (30). Amazon Prime Video also picked up a comedy nomination for “The Discounters 2”. The ZDF counters this with “Semi-detached House”.

In addition to “King of Stonks”, “Sisi 2” received the most nominations in the fiction field with five entries – even if it wasn’t enough for the most important category, best series. This means that the RTL production narrowly beat out its Netflix competitors. “The Empress” only got four nominations.

Private broadcasters win when it comes to entertainment

In the area of entertainment, the private broadcasters are stronger than in fiction. “Who’s stealing the show?” could win the Best Show award for the third year in a row. Competitors are the Kaulitz brothers with their RTL+ show “That’s my Jam” and Giovanni Zarella (45) with his ZDF show of the same name.

Nominated private entertainment formats also include “RTL Saturday Night – The Reunion” and “TV Total”, “Battle of the Reality Stars” and the long-running favorites “Let’s Dance” as well as “I’m a Star – Get Me Out of Here!”. Jan Köppen (40) has been nominated as best presenter for his first season at the RTL Jungle Camp.

Joko Winterscheidt is there twice for information

Joko Winterscheidt isn’t just in the conversation with “Who’s stealing the show?” nominated, but also in terms of information. His Prime Video show “The World’s Most Dangerous Show” about the dangers of climate change has been mentioned three times. Together with Klaas Heufer-Umlauf (39) he is suggested for “Joko & Klaas LIVE #IranRevolution”.
