German was lucky – avalanche swept winter athletes in Tyrol 300 meters away

A 24-year-old German man in the municipality of Ischgl was lucky on Wednesday: when he fell, he triggered an avalanche that swept him around 300 meters away. The right equipment saved the winter sports enthusiast from something worse.

The German was out with three skier friends in the Silvretta Arena in Ischgl on Wednesday morning and skied various off-piste runs with them. When the group wanted to descend from the Höllspitzbahn mountain station at around 10.20 a.m. over the south ridge, which is in the free ski area, an accident occurred. Avalanche airbag kept man up. The 24-year-old was the first to enter the gully and landed after just a few meters the snow surface pressed by the wind to fall. An avalanche of slabs of snow immediately broke out and caught the German and carried him away. Luckily, the winter sports enthusiast quickly managed to deploy his avalanche airbag, forcing him back to the surface of the avalanche. After around 300 meters he finally ended up lying in the snow. His colleagues and other athletes who had observed the avalanche immediately called the emergency services The all-clear was quickly given: further buried people could be ruled out, and the person who was swept away had also been incredibly lucky. He was uninjured; he only lost his equipment in the snow. The piste rescue rescue team rescued the man and brought him back to the ski area.
