Germany: 18% drop in production of private cars in September (VDA)

(AOF) – “Passenger car production in Germany is weakening” announces the VDA, the professional organization of the German automobile sector, reporting that in September, national production reached 340,500 vehicles, down 8% on a year. Production increased by 22% over the first 9 months of the year, to reach 3.1 million units, but it remains down 13% from its pre-pandemic levels. The growth momentum in the year through August came primarily from electric cars.

This dynamic is particularly driven by exclusively battery electric vehicles, whose production increased by 118% to reach 656,500 units. Production of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), particularly popular abroad, increased by 12% to reach 192,600 units.

Exports also declined over the past month. In September, 265,500 new passenger cars were exported from production sites in Germany (-5%). Over the first nine months of this year, 2.3 million vehicles were delivered to customers abroad, which corresponds to an increase of 22% year-on-year, but still remains down 13% on the level pre-crisis.

Compared to September 2022, orders recorded this month are 22% lower. During the first nine months, domestic orders also fell 22% year-on-year. In total, orders recorded during the first nine months are 7% lower than those of the same period of the previous year.

A relevant factor in explaining the development of the German passenger car market was the expiration of the ecological bonus for commercial vehicles, effective August 31, 2023. The effect has already been felt in the battery electric vehicle market over the past month. While new BEV registrations saw a particularly strong increase in August, they fell again in September, which was predictable.
