Germany eases unemployment insurance rules

A burgergeld (citizen income) to succeed the “Hartz vier” device: even in German, the unemployment insurance reform sounds sweeter to the ear with citizen income. This was one of the main promises of the program of candidate Olaf Scholz, whose campaign was articulated around the slogan of “Respect”. The Social Democrat absolutely wanted to turn this painful page of the reforms of the Schröder era, which had caused a lot of trauma in his ranks: a split with the creation of the left-wing party Die Linke and the alienation of a good part of its traditional electorate. Two weeks before his first anniversary as chancellery, Olaf Scholz was able to rejoice on Friday at the adoption of this “citizen’s allowance” by the two Chambers, the Bundestag and the Bundesrat.
