USA invite to global corona summit

A good two years after the start of the pandemic, an international corona summit is to take place in May. On the agenda is a strategy to fight the virus worldwide and to prepare for future health threats. The virtual meeting is to be led by the USA and Germany, among others.

In view of the ongoing corona crisis, the USA has announced a global summit in the fight against the pandemic for May. The summit should take place virtually on May 12, the White House announced today. The meeting will be chaired, among others, by the USA and Germany as the current G7 chair, and G20 chair Indonesia.

“The summit will redouble our collective efforts to end the acute phase of the Covid-19 pandemic and prepare for future health threats,” it said in a statement. “The emergence and spread of new variants such as Omicron have underscored the need for a strategy to combat Covid-19 globally.”

It is the second global gathering on the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than six million people and created massive problems for the global economy since it began two years ago. US President Joe Biden hosted a similar summit last September, urging partners to stockpile vaccines and ensure that at least 70 percent of the population in every country around the world is vaccinated by September this year.

Although the rise in the number of deaths has slowed around the world, the virus continues to spread. For this reason, restrictions still apply in many countries. China is currently battling the worst wave since the pandemic began.
