BERLIN (Reuters) – Consumer price inflation in Germany accelerated in three states but stagnated in two others in May, according to preliminary data released on Wednesday ahead of national figures, which could be mixed.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous state in Germany, the consumer price index rose from 2.3% in April to 2.5% in May on an annual basis.
In Bavaria, the inflation rate also increased this month, from 2.5% to 2.7%, while in Saxony it rose from 2.7% to 3.1%.
In Brandenburg, however, inflation slowed slightly to 2.9%, after 3.0% in April. In Hesse and Baden-Württemberg it remained stable at 1.9% and 2.1% respectively.
At the national level, economists polled by Reuters forecast an inflation rate harmonized with European standards at 2.7% in May, compared to 2.4% in April. This indicator will be published this Wednesday at 12:00 GMT, before the figures for the entire euro zone scheduled for Friday.
According to the Reuters consensus, inflation in the euro zone should stand at +2.5% in May, after +2.4% the previous month.
