Germany89: With the fall of the Berlin Wall, the award-winning series says goodbye

After "Deutschland83" and "Deutschland86", "Deutschland89" is the final of the award-winning series. The wall falls in season three.

It means saying goodbye to the "Germany" trilogy. After "Deutschland83" (2015) and "Deutschland86" (2018), "Deutschland89" is the crowning glory of the series.

The end of an award-winning series

"Deutschland83", the title of the first season, was released at the end of 2015 – at that time it was still on free TV. But the odds were not convincing. There was a switch to streaming. The second season, "Deutschland86", was published on Amazon Prime Video in October 2018.

"Deutschland83" won numerous prizes, including the International Emmy Award in the "Drama Series" category and the Grimme Prize. Leading actor Jonas Nay (30) was also able to look forward to being named best actor at the German Television Prize in 2016. He was honored for "Germany 83" and "Tannbach – fate of a village".

At the center of the "Germany" trilogy is Oberfeldwebel and border soldier Martin Rauch, played by Jonas Nay. In season one he is sent to the West as a GDR spy – code name Kolibri. There he is supposed to spy on the Bundeswehr and expose NATO's further plans. In season two, which leaps in time by three years, Martin Rauch ekes out his existence in Africa until he embarks on a new, dangerous mission. But is he still 100 percent connected to his home country?

This is what "Deutschland89" is about

On November 9, 1989, the "anti-fascist protective wall" fell and the notorious GDR spy Martin Rauch was overtaken by the events. Not only did he suddenly lose his identity and home through the peaceful revolution in November 1989, his comrades from the GDR's foreign intelligence service (HVA) also became unemployed practically overnight – and at the end of the Cold War, they were asked how they would feel in this Want to position chaos.

Switch to the big brother, the KGB? Would you like to take the plunge to the west to start over there as an agent for an enemy service? As a businessman, let international contacts play a role? Or pack the hoarded money and gold and secure a place in the sun? As in every crisis, there are plenty of opportunities – but there are also new dangers in the opaque thicket of the legendary turning point of winter and the merciless game of spies.

The eight episodes of "Deutschland89" will be available in Germany from September 25, 2020 on Amazon Prime Video.
