In view of the extreme heat in Germany, Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD) is calling for German cities to become greener. This could also result in fewer parking spaces being available. “We need more green in the city and our cities must also be able to store more water when we look at the heavy rain events,” said Geywitz in the early start on ntv. The Federal Building Ministry is presenting a federal program for climate-adapted cities this Tuesday.
Geywitz explained that projects for street and facade greening are to be promoted, as well as the construction of inner-city rivers and streams: “Water can then be stored and drained, but of course it also cools the area and is also beautiful.”
When asked whether the projects would result in fewer parking spaces being available in the inner cities, the Federal Minister for Building said: “A car like this actually takes up a lot of space, which is then lacking for others. As a result, we also have to rethink our mobility concepts. ” Geywitz added: “If we want to plant trees, then of course they also need space.” But you also have to think about the question of where “our cars are staying. That means that you don’t just waste space just for parking, but that you have a combination option,” says Geywitz.
“Especially older people suffer a lot”
Geywitz also announced that her ministry wanted to protect older people from extreme heat in apartments: “Elderly people in particular suffer a lot from the heat and are very often in their apartments. Of course, with good renovation funding, we also have to ensure that the apartments are well insulated and people are informed, especially on very hot days when there are ways to cool off.”
Geywitz also cited the protection of the homeless in extreme summer temperatures as an example. A “national action plan” to combat homelessness is being drawn up here.
Minister calls for saving electricity and gas
Geywitz called on citizens to save more electricity and gas in order to prevent an explosion in additional costs. “We are doing everything we can to ensure a stable supply. But that also means that we are all called upon to save electricity and gas, simply with a view to the costs that every private household will incur.”
Geywitz added: “We have to set an incentive for everyone to save individually, otherwise you’ll just have to take on a huge burden next year.” The state should not simply “subsidize away” these additional costs.
Geywitz did not want to give an assurance of a moratorium on electricity and gas locks. Asked about a possible further heating cost subsidy from the federal government, the SPD politician said: “It is very important to me that we don’t bingo with suggestions during the summer break, but that we react to the foreseeable challenge with a targeted relief plan.”
