The Minister of Construction praises the Germans for their discipline when it comes to saving energy. Geywitz does not want to give up the goal of 400,000 new apartments per year and sees even more demand.
Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz has called for energy savings to continue despite the cold temperatures in Germany. “By now, at the latest, most people have certainly turned on the heating and of course we can see that in the gas consumption,” said the SPD politician in the ntv early start.
Geywitz referred to the federal government’s relief packages, saying that it was good that tenants had “the security” that they would provide relief in the area of electricity and gas costs. But Geywitz also emphasized: “What Klaus Müller said applies: Of course we still have to save. But I think most of them will do it on their own.”
Geywitz also praised the citizens: “Overall, as Germans, we did a great job. On the one hand, we saved and, on the other hand, we opened up alternative supply options.”
Recently, Geywitz had come under increasing pressure because the federal government’s goal of 400,000 newly built apartments per year was becoming increasingly unrealistic. Nevertheless, the minister said that she still wants to stick to the goal of 400,000 new apartments per year: “It would be honest if you said: We actually need more than 400,000.”
“Far too little has been invested in social housing over the years”
Geywitz added: “You can also see that rents are rising. That means we can’t give up, more apartments are needed.” The SPD politician referred to her ministry’s efforts to increase state subsidies for social housing: “Far too little has been invested there over the years. We’re giving 14.5 billion into it so that the federal states can also promote it.” The SPD woman emphasized: “My clear message is that we will do everything we can to build the necessary apartments in Germany.”
