Ghislaine Maxwell's marriage was to serve as an argument against a potential risk of flight. Now she's talking about divorce.

The case of Ghislaine Maxwell (58), the former confidante of the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein (1953-2019), is getting more and more confused. It was only in the summer of this year that it became known that she had had a husband since 2016. Now new court documents are said to reveal that the 58-year-old was apparently planning to divorce tech entrepreneur Scott Borgerson, 44.

Sudden change of heart?

As emerges from an application by three US prosecutors who speak out against Maxwell's proposed bail, the 58-year-old is said to have asserted to investigators after her arrest that the "divorce process" was already underway. Several US media reported unanimously, including the "New York Post".

During the hearing in August that year, Maxwell had refused to reveal her husband's identity. So why the apparent change of heart? Prosecutors write that Maxwell may have felt abandoned by Borgerson after her arrest. The latter "refused to report at the time of her arrest".

Why could the separation be crucial?

Ghislaine Maxwell is currently on remand. Among other things, she is accused of helping Epstein abuse underage girls. In order to be able to be with her family at Christmas, Maxwell's lawyers are said to have submitted an offer to the competent court in New York for a bail of 28.5 million US dollars (about 23.4 million euros). Most of the money came from husband Borgerson.

However, if Maxwell and Borgerson are no longer lovers, an earlier statement by the 58-year-old should now be invalid, the prosecutors argue further. They feel that Maxwell's claim that "their marriage is the main reason that she would stay in the United States" is no longer valid. There is a risk of escape.
