The former confidante of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, has failed with her bail application.

Ghislaine Maxwell, 59, will not be released on bail. New York judge Alison Nathan denied a motion to this effect on Monday by former confidantes of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein (1953-2019); there is a "risk of escape". This is reported by the New York Post, among others.

"The court concludes that none of the new information the defendant provided in support of her motion had any significant bearing on the court's determination that she posed an escape risk," Nathan said, adding that she made the decision based on the nature of the crime, the severity of the evidence, and Maxwell's background.

Security deposit increased from $ 5 million to $ 28.5 million

Shortly after Maxwell's arrest in July 2020, the same judge refused to release her into house arrest on bail of $ 5 million (around € 4 million). At the time, Alison Nathan described the applicant's financial statements as fuzzy and raised concerns about the British and French passports that Maxwell also held. As a result, her lawyers filed a bail request in mid-December in the amount of 28.5 million US dollars (about 23.4 million euros).

There are so far six charges against Maxwell. She is accused, among other things, of helping Epstein abuse underage girls in the 1990s. She is also charged with perjury on two counts. Maxwell, who has denied all allegations and pleads "not guilty", faces up to 35 years in prison if convicted. The process is scheduled to start in July 2021.
