Canadian director Ivan Reitman died on Sunday December 13 at the age of 75. He was mainly known for his comedies including “Ghostbusters”.

The world of cinema is once again in mourning. This Sunday, February 13, Ivan Reitman, the Canadian director of “Ghostbusters”, died at the age of 75. It was his family who announced the sad news to the Associated Press news agency, explaining that he died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Montecito, California.

“Our family mourns the unexpected loss of a husband, father and grandfather who taught us to always seek the magic in life”his children said in a press release. “We are heartened that his work as a filmmaker has brought laughter and happiness to countless people around the world. As we mourn privately, we hope those who knew him through his films will always remember him.”

Author of the hit film “Ghostbusters”

Director but also producer, Ivan Reitman made himself known to the general public in 1983 with the release of “American College”, a film focusing on university fraternities. The following year, in 1984, he signed a new cinematographic success with the legendary “Ghostbusters”. This comedy follows the adventures of three researchers (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis) from Columbia University, totally wacky, who after being dismissed from their jobs, decide to open a paranormal investigation company called “SOS Ghosts”. The feature film was a great success with viewers around the world, generating nearly $300 million and earning two Oscar nominations.

Among his other achievements, we find “A kindergarten cop” (1990) with Arnold Schwarzenegger, “Funny fathers” (1993) with Robin Williams and Billy Crystal or “Sex Friends” (2011) with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher . If Ivan Reitman knew how to establish himself as a director, he also proved his talents as a producer with other successful comedies such as “Beethoven” (1992-1993) or “Space Jam” (1996). He leaves behind three children including his son Jason Reitman, who follows in his footsteps in the world of the seventh art.
