Canadian Laura Kay clearly wasn’t interested in a petite pet: instead, she owns a giant tomcat named Dexter, who is the size of a full-grown lynx male and weighs an impressive 24 pounds. Dexter is an “F6 Savannah cat”, six generations removed from a serval, a feral cat species native to Africa.
Dexter: Big and heavy like a predator
At seven years old, Dexter weighs a whopping eleven kilograms and measures an impressive 89 centimeters. And that brings with it a number of problems: Due to its size, it cannot simply use an ordinary litter box from the pet shop. Instead, Dexter needs a 110 liter storage box for its stores.
In fact, Dexter is so big that he only plays with dog toys and eats dog treats. Why are cat products not an option for him? Laura, a laser technician from West Lincoln, Ontario, Canada, puts it bluntly: “I buy him dog toys because he just destroys small cat toys. Cat towers are way too small for him. I bought him the biggest one I can I could find, but it’s still way too small for him. Even cat treats are too small for him. If the ingredients are the same, I’ll buy him dog treats.”
An apparition that intimidates
No wonder Dexter’s size makes some people nervous too. “The last time someone was afraid of him was at the vet,” says Laura. “They were a little worried about how he would react. A cat his size could do a lot of damage. He has the power. But he would never do that.”
And then there’s the cost of living with this giant feline: Dexter’s size makes it a pretty expensive pet, and Laura spends the equivalent of $100 a month on toys, food and vet bills.
