Giant SUV – The new BMW X7: It hasn’t gotten any more delicate

That doesn’t even look that bad! After the BMW iX, we feared the worst when it came to the design of the new BMW X7. But the pictures that have just been published show a front that will certainly not please everyone and also means a departure from the previous BMW design, but somehow seems coherent.

It was to be assumed that the kidneys wouldn’t get any smaller, that’s the way it should be, with a ship like this one needn’t complain about that. However, LED daytime running light slits are daring. But in the future we will not only have to get used to the X7. You can only see at second glance that the actual headlights are underneath. One question must be allowed: Why does BMW use the Citroën design? BMW makes sure that the X7 can be perceived as a special light figure with the option list: The kidneys can also be ordered with Iconic Glow called “discreet waterfall lighting” (standard in the M60i). At the rear, the Munich-based company has resisted the temptation to connect the LED lights with an LED light strip. Instead, a chrome clasp runs behind glass. Overall, the look is almost unobtrusive. You can put it on thicker with the appropriate choice of wheels: For the first time at BMW, 23-inch wheels can be ordered ex works (series: 20 inches). The new BMW X7 has seven seats as standard, with optional individual seats for the second row the total number is reduced to six. In Europe, the individual leather interior Merino is standard, on other markets instead vegan “leather” called Sensafin, which is not available in Europe. Optionally, all seats are heated (row one as standard), as are armrests and cup holders. The view upwards is always free, the panoramic glass roof with three glass elements is standard. If desired, LED lighting can be integrated. The cockpit has a relatively classic design, but also gets the attached curved display (consisting of a 12.3-inch speedometer display and 14.3-inch touchscreen), which is now available in all new BMWs unimaginativeness of the designers represented. Especially when viewed from the side, it looks like a foreign body in the BMW X7. There is a center console as before, and the rotary push button is also retained (unlike in the new 2 Series Active Tourer). The gear selector switch has been redesigned, the driving mode buttons remain the same as ever. The operating system is that of the BMW iX, called OS 8, and unfortunately leaves a lot to be desired in terms of clarity. Combustion engine with new mild hybrid automatic Electrification is finding its way into the BMW X7, and the three engines on offer are all 48-volt mild hybrids. All three have in common the brand new eight-speed automatic sports transmission, in which an electric motor is integrated. It supports the combustion engines with up to 9 kW/12 hp and a maximum torque of 200 Nm. This improves response and efficiency, and the automatic stop-start system is said to work more smoothly. In the Eco Pro driving mode, coasting is supported, i.e. coasting with the engine switched off. The system’s battery is located in the engine compartment and is charged via recuperation during overrun and braking phases. The top engine is a 4.4-liter V8 turbo petrol engine with 530 hp and 750 Nm, which is under the hood of the X7 M60i xDrive. The base petrol engine in the xDrive40i is a heavily revised in-line six-cylinder, which now works according to the so-called Miller combustion process and whose variable camshaft control now works electrically. It has increased by 47 hp to 380 hp and by 70 to 520 Nm (540 Nm with e-assistance). The only diesel engine is the 352 hp and 700 Nm (720 Nm with e-assistance) strong three-liter six-cylinder in the xDrive40d. It sprints in 6.1 seconds and is, as expected, the “master economist” in the group, with 7.6 to 8.7 l/100 km. The driving performance is powerful: the top X7 only needs 4.7 seconds to – among the Sound of the standard sports exhaust – to reach 100 km/h. BMW specifies the WLTP consumption as 12.2 to 13.3 l/100 km. The smaller gasoline engine treats itself to a good second more when sprinting, but with 9.2 to 10.5 liters it uses significantly less fuel. In the M60i, the regulated differential lock on the rear axle is added. Strong reversing assistant and always-on camera It was to be expected that the new BMW X7 is packed to the brim with assistance systems. The extended reversing assistant is particularly noteworthy, which can save a distance of 200 meters and reverse the same route on request. An assistant is also integrated to make maneuvering with a trailer easier. The camera system can be used to film a sequence of up to 60 seconds of the surroundings at any time while driving. In the event of an accident, the 20 seconds before the impact and the 40 seconds after are automatically recorded. If the car is stolen, the owner receives a message on their smartphone, after which they can activate camera recording on the front, rear and side mirrors. The new BMW X7 is being built at the Spartanburg/South Carolina plant. Global launch is scheduled for August 2022.
