There will be no question of revolution. The NVMe PCI Express 5.0 SSD will certainly offer higher speeds than the previous generation, but with counterparts that should not be overlooked.
However, this release should not upset the SSD market, given the prices charged on these first models.
An official release two weeks ago
At the beginning of February, we echoed the release of the first NVMe SSD to the PCIe 5.0 standard. Designed by CFD Gaming, the device was however only announced in Japan, and since then it has not left the archipelago.
In the process, several manufacturers have put forward their own products, but it is Gigabyte which has been the most enterprising in ” formalizing the release of its Aorus Gen5 10000. Logically presented as the fastest model in its catalog, the SSD was to come out in 1 and 2 TB versions, and be based on the Phison E26 controller, for maximum speeds of 10 GB/s.
On order from several retailers
Problem, since this announcement by Gigabyte, no reseller in North America or Europe has actually listed this product. Things seem to be changing, however, and the Aorus Gen5 10000 should be the first PCIe 5.0 SSD available outside of Japan.
Indeed, as we point out TechPowerUp, several resellers have added a product sheet related to this SSD. Thus, at Amazon or Newegg, orders can now be placed. Note, however, that this still only concerns North America.
The 2 TB price is set at $339.99, which considerably increases the bill compared to Western Digital’s WD_Black SN850X 2 TB, sold at $159.99 in the same stores. The performance of the Aorus will be better, but probably not that much. Check it out when the time comes!
