Invited on the TF1 set, Gilles Lellouche returned to his weight gain for the film Asterix and Obelix.
They were the guests of Anne-Claire Coudray in the 20 hours of TF1, this Sunday January 22, 2023. Guillaume Canet and Gilles Lellouche came to talk about their film, Asterix and Obelix. And for the first time, it is not Gérard Depardieu who embodies the role of Obélix but rather Gilles Lellouche. The actor then confided in his dazzling weight gain in order to embody his character. “Twenty in six months. It’s Obélix. Obélix is France and who was doing Obélix before? Gérard Depardieu, for the first four films. So succeeding Gérard was complicated in my head”he confided.
Gilles Lellouche then confided that he called “several times” Gérard Depardieu to discuss the role with him. “He never answered and then one day, he called me back nicely to say: ‘What, do you want some advice on how to play Obélix? I’ll tell you something: Obélix, he has daisies in his eyes, here it is, that’s all, hello my doe.’ naivety, childhood in a raw body”he said. Guillaume Canet wanted to remind : “The idea is not to forget Gérard Depardieu, we don’t forget him, and we can’t forget him in this character, but Gilles managed to embody the character of the comic strip and therefore immediately, when the movie starts, we’re with the character from the comics and it’s fantastic. He did a really great job.”

The opportunity also for Gilles Lellouche to come back to his collaboration with Guillaume Canet : “We argued a lot, to find each other better afterwards, but like the characters. That’s what is very interesting in this film, it’s that we are in the intimacy of these characters that we have known for so long and it becomes, probably for the first time, well I find it, extremely touching”.
