After ten years together, Giorgia Meloni and her partner are going their separate ways. Italy’s head of government announced this on Friday.

The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, 46, has separated from her partner Andrea Giambruno, 42, after ten years together. The right-wing conservative politician said this on Friday morning (October 20th). on the online platform X (formerly Twitter).. There had previously been speculation about the separation in the Italian media for several weeks.

“Thank him for the great years”

“My relationship with Andrea Giambruno, which lasted almost ten years, ends here,” writes Meloni alongside a photo of the couple with their daughter. “I thank him for the great years we spent together, for the difficulties we went through and for giving me the most important thing in my life, which is our daughter Ginevra.”

At the same time, Meloni confirmed the rumors that the relationship broke up several weeks ago: “We parted ways some time ago and it is time to acknowledge it.” She wanted to “defend what we were, our friendship and at all costs a seven-year-old girl who loves her mother and her father – the way I couldn’t love my father.” In her autobiography “Io sono Giorgia”, published in 2021, Meloni revealed how much she suffered as a child because her father left her mother and moved to Spain.

“I have nothing further to say about it,” Meloni ends her statement and then adds: “Anyone who hoped to weaken me by snooping around in my private life should know: as much as the drop may hope To hollow a stone, the drop remains just water, and the stone remains stone.”

Was that the reason for the breakup?

A misogynistic remark made by Giambruno was recently reported on Italian television. In an audio recording published on the satirical show “Stricia la notizia” you can hear the television presenter making advances to a young new colleague, calling her a “beauty” and asking: “Why didn’t I get to know you before?” Apparently Giambruno assumed his microphone had already been switched off.

Back in August, a statement made by Giambruno about rape victims caused anger. In a discussion with other journalists, he said, addressing women: “If you go dancing, you have every right to get drunk. But if you avoid getting drunk and passing out, you might also avoid getting drunk to get into trouble and meet the wolf.”

Giorgia Meloni and Andrea Giambruno had been in a relationship since 2014, but the couple was not married. Their daughter Ginevra was born in 2016. Meloni has been Prime Minister of Italy since October 2022. She belongs to the right-wing conservative party “Fratelli d’Italia”.
