A US federal judge ruled Wednesday that over 400 victims who were forced to make revealing videos with false promises were entitled to $ 18 million in damages. In addition, the transfer of the copyrights of the videos published on the net without their consent was ordered.
False promises and coercion
The perpetrators lured women with bogus websites and advertisements for model shootings and promised them high salaries if they got involved in pornographic film shoots on site. According to the abuse victims, the talk was never about distributing the recordings on the Internet, but rather that they should only be sold abroad on DVD.
Instead, the films ended up in the now closed porn portals GirlsDoPorn and GirlsDoToys. And women who changed their minds or refused to shoot were arrested or threatened with lawsuits or online publications of the previous content.
One of the main perpetrators, 31-year-old Rubens Garcia, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in June for these offenses.
Garcia, who was involved in some of the films as a producer and actor, must also transfer the copyrights to the victims and make compensation payments totaling 18 million US dollars. 49 victims of these practices also achieved a comparison with Pornhub, whose videos were uploaded to the portal. Michael James Pratt, another mastermind, is wanted by the FBI. He is offered a reward of $ 50,000.
For the victims, the decision offers a better tool to have the videos removed from the network. You can now request a “takedown” notice under the US Digital Millennium Act whenever a website is hosting their video footage.
