Hardly anyone would deny that the encounter between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayern Munich is a top game. There are good reasons to doubt this. The Gladbacher have a lousy season behind them, in which they were at times threatened with relegation, the Bavarians, on the other hand, were unchallenged for the tenth time in a row German champions.

The fact that the perception is different is due to two things: the dazzling history of Mönchengladbach, who fought tough duels with Bayern for the title in the seventies – and a new coach who is spreading something like a spirit of optimism in Gladbach . Daniel Farke is the name of the coach, most recently in Krasnodar in Russia, whose most impressive job was one in England, when he twice led Norwich City into the Premier League.

Farke’s way of communicating, which seems extremely open, is well received in Mönchengladbach. And it has had good results so far: two of the first three games were won, and Gladbach drew in Schalke. Nevertheless, Farke judged his team’s chances of success rather conservatively: “I don’t think Bayern are afraid of Gladbach.” After all, according to Farke, the Munich team is probably in the best form in Europe.

Who would disagree? Bayern’s record is flawless with 15-1 goals from three games. However, Gladbach have often been an uncomfortable opponent for Bayern in recent years – and this proved to be the case again on Saturday in Munich. Despite Bayern’s overwhelming superiority, it was Borussia who took the lead in Munich. Marcus Thuram scored two minutes before the break. It would have been quite possible for Bayern to lead by then, they were the dominant team. And they stayed that way even after the Gladbach goal.

The fact that the game did not turn into a defeat for Mönchengladbach was mainly due to goalkeeper Yann Sommer. With two almost uncanny reflexes he cleared against Sadio Mané, Benjamin Pavard and Leroy Sané also despaired of him. The German national player Sané managed to equalize. But more was not possible that evening for Bayern, who hardly made anything out of 30 attempts.
