After “Gladiator 2”, Ridley Scott will produce a series dedicated to the tragedy of Pompeii in collaboration with screenwriter Michael Hirst (“Vikings”).
In a few weeks, Ridley Scott will finally unveil Gladiator II, the sequel to his historical masterpiece released almost a quarter of a century ago. Awarded the Oscar for Best Film, Gladiator also allowed Russell Crowe to obtain recognition from the general international public (but also to win the Oscar for Best Actor).
Back to the peplum box for Ridley Scott
Throughout his career, Ridley Scott has been interested in different periods of History: the Middle Ages (The Last Duel), the Crusades (Kingdom of Heaven) and the Napoleonic era (The Duellists, Napoleon) . But it is to the peplum that the English filmmaker has contributed the most, notably by managing to bring this unfashionable genre back into fashion in the early 2000s thanks to the success of Gladiator.
And while a third Gladiator could see the light of day following the second, the insatiable 86-year-old director is embarking on a new historic project. The latter is in fact preparing to produce an adaptation of the book A Day of Fire: A Novel of Pompeii – an anthological work retracing the famous tragedy of Pompeii through the pens of six novelists.
In 79 BC, Mount Vesuvius erupted and engulfed the surrounding city of Pompeii in southern Italy. Almost all of its inhabitants were killed that day, and this natural disaster has since been considered one of the worst of ancient times. The city of Pompeii has today become a popular tourist attraction for vacationers.
A big name from the historical series will collaborate on the project
The series will be directed by Horatio Hirst, son of screenwriter Michael Hirst (the creator of Vikings) who will be credited as screenwriter and producer. Co-produced by the production company Scott Free (co-created by Ridley Scott with his brother, the late Tony Scott) and Amazon MGM, the project is just entering the writing phase, and will not begin filming until next year – at best.
The tragedy of Pompeii has been brought to the screen many times. Notably in Sergio Leone’s very first film entitled The Last Days of Pompeii (co-directed by Mario Bonnard), the mini-series of the same name with Laurence Olivier and more recently in the blockbuster Pompeii by Paul WS Anderson with Kit Harrington.
Until then, fans of epics and Ridley Scott will have the opportunity to discover his brand new film Gladiator II, in cinemas from November 13.
