The UK government is supporting Glastonbury Festival as part of a cultural aid package with a million dollar grant.

The cultural industry around the world is suffering from the consequences of the corona pandemic. There is now a ray of hope for music fans and organizers in Great Britain: the government wants to support the Glastonbury Festival with a grant. The festival is one of 2,700 cultural companies that the government wants to support in the corona pandemic with a 400 million pound (equivalent to around 470 million euros) reconstruction package, as it was announced on Friday (April 2nd) in a press release announced.

Accordingly, the largest greenfield music festival in the world is to receive 900,000 British pounds (around 1.06 million euros). Glastonbury organizer Michael Evis and daughter Emily said in a statement via Twitter: “This grant will make a big difference to our future.”

The organizers had to cancel the festival in 2020 and the event will not run as usual in 2021 either. Instead of a big live festival, there will be a live stream concert on May 22nd, at which Coldplay will perform.

According to the press release, museums, theaters, cinemas and event venues should also benefit from the British government’s million dollar aid package. The English Heritage Trust, an organization that looks after more than 400 historical monuments and buildings, receives 23.4 million pounds (around 27.5 million euros). The British Film Institute can look forward to 6.5 million pounds (around 7.7 million euros). “We want to stand by their side while they prepare to welcome guests again,” said Minister of Culture Oliver Dowden, explaining the support.
