Oscar winner and later politician Glenda Jackson is dead. The British woman died at the age of 87 after a short illness.

British actress and politician Glenda Jackson (1936-2023) passed away on June 15. The two-time Oscar winner passed away peacefully at her home in Blackheath, London, surrounded by her family after a short illness including the US magazine “People” citing a statement from her agent Lionel Larner.

“Today we lost one of the greatest actresses in the world,” Jackson’s agent added in a personal note. She had also been his “best friend” for the past 35 years. Jackson was 87 years old.

From the screen to the House of Commons and back

Born in Birkenhead, UK in 1936, Glenda Jackson was already in front of the cameras in the 1950s. She was scouted for the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1960s before rising to stardom in the 1970s.

Jackson won her first Oscar for Best Actress for her film “Women in Love” in 1971, and three years later her second golden boy for “Mann, bist du Klasse!” (“A Touch of Class”). She also received a Golden Globe Award and two Emmys for the role of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) in the BBC production “Elizabeth R”.

Politically involved from an early age, Jackson later retired from acting and moved to the British House of Commons for the Labor Party in 1992. She sat in Parliament until 2015. Jackson then returned to acting.

In 2018, she received a Tony Award for a Broadway revival of Three Tall Women. In addition to numerous other honors, she also received an International Emmy Award for “Elizabeth Is Missing” in 2020. According to her agent, she recently wrapped filming for the movie “The Great Escaper” alongside Michael Caine, 90.
