Glimmer of hope for Huawei: Cell phone manufacturer celebrates unexpected success

It is well known that Huawei is going through a valley of tears. The US sanctions have hit the once successful cell phone manufacturer hard. But there is now a small ray of hope from the home market that hardly anyone would have expected.

The numbers don’t look good for Huawei in China: Compared to last year, the company posted one in the third quarter of 2021 juicy minus of 77 percent. Huawei, once the market leader in the People’s Republic, is now only 7th in the ranking of the largest smartphone manufacturers (source: Gizchina). Even the former subsidiary brand has now even been able to place itself in front of the ex-parent company. But there is also a glimmer of hope hidden between the horror numbers.

Despite losses, Huawei was able to achieve its Defend leadership in the 5G smartphone segment. That increased to a total of 27.4 percent. More than a quarter of the smartphones sold in China in the third quarter of 2021 already had the fast cellular standard on board.

Almost a third of this was accounted for by Huawei smartphones, the manufacturer was able to get one Market share of 30.7 percent secure and thus the gold medal. In second and third place are Vivo and Oppo, followed by Apple and Xiaomi. Bitter for Samsung: The global smartphone leader does not play a role in this important segment in China and is only 0.9 percent.

For Huawei, success with 5G smartphones is certain Balm on the battered soul – and should also be a welcome distraction from the lousy PR that was recently brought about by an explosive report in the Washington Post. In spite of the current hurdles, the Chinese are also not thinking of withdrawing from the smartphone market. The long-awaited international release of the Huawei P50 Pro could be pending soon.
