Bioenergies

takes stock of its situation and its prospects in a representation in four horizons, each corresponding to a volume and a production cost on the one hand, and to one or more target markets on the other hand.

The first horizon consisted in the conversion of renewable resources into isobutene and derivatives, on the scale of a few tons per year. Production was carried out using the industrial demonstrator installed in Leuna, Germany, which has now been dismantled. These volumes made it possible to carry out numerous process validation tests, but the production cost was too high to allow the marketing of isobutene or its derivatives as such. However, a marketing approach has been identified: isododecane, a derivative obtained by combining three molecules of isobutene, constitutes the basis for the formulation of all long-lasting eye and lip makeup. It is systematically the first ingredient in proportion, and is not substitutable, to date, by other compounds. The Company has moved down the value chain to the end customer, and has produced the first make-up range combining long-wear and more than 90% naturalness. This is how the LAST brand

®

was born.

Florence Hébert, director of the LAST business unit

®

states: “The LAST product line

®

has been designed to combine performance and naturalness, and breaks the codes of make-up of natural origin. In addition to being marketed via our website www.colors-that-last.com, the brand is now present in several physical or digital points of sale. The brand should soon be distributed by a major brand, and the year 2023 should see the opening of new points of sale, in France and abroad. »

The second horizon begins: it is a question of producing isobutene in tens of tons per year. An entirely French production chain has been set up, and consists of five stages, four of which are carried out in the facilities of subcontractors. Only the second stage, which consists of the production of the isobutene itself, is carried out in a unit belonging to Global Bioenergies. This unit was built in recent months on the Pomacle site, near Reims. The construction phase is now complete, and commissioning is underway. It should make it possible to reach the maximum capacity of nearly 2 tonnes of isobutene per week by the end of 2022. Part of this isobutene will be converted into isododecane and sold as a make-up ingredient, under the Isonaturane brand.

®

12, to major players in cosmetics.

Daphné Galvez, Commercial Director of Global Bioenergies, explains: “The first batch, corresponding to several tons of Isonaturane

®

12, will be delivered in the first quarter of 2023. A significant part of this batch has been acquired by L’Oréal. We then plan to produce a batch in the summer of 2023, then another batch at the end of the year. Global Bioenergies is in the process of being listed by around ten players, some of whom have already purchased volumes to carry out tests, and in particular formulation pilots. In all, we plan to deliver around 15 tonnes of Isonaturane

®

12 in 2023. The debottlenecking of the downstream part of the sector by our subcontractors would allow us from 2024 to produce and deliver a higher volume. »

Isobutene not having been converted to Isonaturane

®

12 will be sold directly or converted into other isobutene tree-product compounds to initiate Horizon 3 commercial activity.

Horizon 3 will consist of the construction and commissioning in 2025 of a plant with a capacity of 2,000 tonnes per year of isobutene and derivatives. A project company, initially a subsidiary

100% owned by Global Bioenergies, is being created and will lead the project. The production cost of isobutene and its derivatives will be greatly reduced thanks to the significant economies of scale achieved and greater integration of the production stages. Isonaturane sales

®

12 will not only be intended for the make-up market, but also for the much larger markets of dermocosmetics and hair care. In addition, this plant will also be able to serve other markets, in materials and fuels in particular.

Ronan Euzen, business development director of Global Bioenergies, explains: “Many discussions have taken place recently with industrialists, in fields as diverse as rubbers, gases or industrial solvents. Times are changing, and the entire industry is now actively looking for solutions to limit the consumption of petroleum products. In the field of land fuels, in particular, we are seeing a paradigm shift: European announcements on the possible end of thermal vehicles are linking their destiny to that of biofuels. Market niches will be exploitable from horizon 3.”

Horizon 4, which should see the light of day within 5 years, will consist of setting up a unit producing tens of thousands of tons of isobutene per year, with a reduced cost allowing it to target the fuel market of aviation. The desire of many Western countries is strong in terms of reducing CO emissions

of this sector with a strong environmental impact.

Bernard Chaud, Director of Industrial Strategy at Global Bioenergies, said: “The certification of our technology for air transport is on track. Achieving the performance improvement goals set by our R&D will allow our process for converting waste sugars into sustainable aviation fuel to achieve cost competitiveness. Thus, we hold out the prospect of significantly reducing, on a global scale, greenhouse gas emissions from air transport. »

Marc Delcourt, co-founder and managing director of Global Bioenergies, concludes: “The implementation of a new sector is always based, initially, on niche markets. The multiple niche markets for isobutene and its derivatives have led to our roadmap in four horizons, and allow our company, still small, to concretely tackle a challenge as vast as that of environmental transition. »

About GLOBAL BIOENERGIES

Global Bioenergies converts plant resources into compounds used in cosmetics as well as in the fields of energy and materials. After having launched in 2021 the first long-lasting and natural make-up brand LAST

®

Global Bioenergies now markets Isonaturane

®

12, its key ingredient, to major cosmetics players in order to improve the naturalness of their formulations and their environmental footprint. His process has many applications in specialty chemistry, as well as in the field of polymers. Ultimately, Global Bioenergies has the prospect of reducing CO emissions
