The Gmail app for Android is about to roll out new icons that make it easy to distinguish Google Chat and Spaces notifications on the status bar.
Google is tweaking its Chat and Spaces services. We learn that the firm is currently deploying a novelty for the Gmail application on Android. It will soon make it possible to easily differentiate notifications relating to the two platforms, thanks to new icons appearing on the status bar. Note that this novelty is taking shape as Hangouts is gradually being pushed out for Google Workspace users.
As 9to5Google recalls, notifications of new messages on Google Chat and Google Spaces were displayed until now through the same icon (it appeared in two bubbles one in front of the other) in the status bar. A rather impractical situation for use. The two services will now each benefit from a specific icon: an empty conversation bubble for Google Chat, and an icon representing a group of three people for Google Spaces.
Differentiate between Google Chat and Spaces notifications at a glance
Insignificant at first glance, this small change should help users, especially professionals, to distinguish more quickly where the new message received comes from. For more uniformity, these new icons are also matched to that representing the arrival of a new mail on Gmail.
As pointed out 9to5Google, the icon dedicated to Google Chat on the other hand has the fault of being a little too discreet, while that of Google Space can initially think of an icon linked to Twitter or another social network. So you will have to get used to it.
Anyway, this novelty is not yet widely deployed on Gmail for Android. Currently, it could only be observed on version 2022.02.20.x of the application, it reads. Similarly, the standalone Google Chat app has not yet been updated.
