Have you set up an e-mail account with GMX and no longer want to use it? We will show you how to properly terminate and delete the free account, the TopMail and the ProMail account from GMX.
If you have previously used GMX Mail but now want to switch to another e-mail provider, you should first completely delete your account, including the data stored there, for data protection reasons. Depending on the type of your e-mail account, you have to pay attention to a few special features.
The procedure differs depending on whether you have a free GMX FreeMail account or a paid account (TopMail or ProMail). If you have the latter, you must first cancel your current contracts with GMX in order to delete your account. Have your customer number ready to ensure that the cancellation process runs smoothly. You can find this in your account under “My Account” and “Help & Contact”.
If you want to use a different email service, you don’t necessarily have to delete your account. Alternatively, many mailers, including GMX, have a forwarding function with which you can forward sent emails to another account that you are actively using.
Dissolve GMX contract
If you are using a paid GMX account, you must cancel the contract with the provider before you can carry out the above steps. You must note that the notice period ends four weeks before the end of the contract period (1 year). Your contract will be automatically extended if you do not send the cancellation in good time. Under “My Account” and “My Contracts” you will find further information on your concluded contract.
To terminate the contract, contact GMX support directly. You can reach them via the official GMX support page or by phone. It’s easier with the digital cancellation assistant from GMX or (as shown in the picture) directly in your account.
After the termination of the contract, your account will only be downgraded to a FreeMail account. To delete this, you must then follow the steps described above.
GMX can reassign your email address after termination. If another user registers with your previous e-mail address, he will also receive all messages. If someone from your circle of friends still has this e-mail in their mailing list and sends holiday photos to this e-mail, for example, the new user will see them.
If you are happy with the email service but want a little more security, we recommend setting up two-factor authentication for GMX. We present a very special feature of the provider to you in our guide on the subject of “Setting up notifications at GMX”.
