Gnabry falls out, Brandt comes
Now Flick nominates another BVB professional

Hansi Flick wants to start the World Cup year well prepared. But the national coach has to do without a number of regular players in his team. Now Serge Gnabry is also out, he is leaving the DFB team with an infection. Flick nominated – and now brings a Dortmund player into the squad.

The German national team also has to do without Serge Gnabry at the start of the World Cup year. The Bayern Munich professional left the team quarters near Frankfurt “as a precautionary measure” because of mild symptoms of a flu infection on Wednesday, the German Football Association (DFB) announced.

National coach Hansi Flick nominated Dortmund’s Julian Brandt. He has for the internationals on Saturday (8.45 p.m./ZDF and in the ntv.de live ticker) in Sinsheim against Israel and on Tuesday in Amsterdam against the Netherlands, 23 players are available. As the DFB further reported, all four rapid antigen tests for infection with Covid-19 carried out since arriving on Monday were negative.

Brandt is the only Dortmunder in Flick’s squad. He was supposed to join the team during the day, but he was still absent from the second training session in the morning at the Eintracht Frankfurt stadium. BVB sports director Michael Zorc from Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund had asked the Dortmund professionals to underpin their chances of being nominated for the national team with good performances. “Everyone is called upon to perform,” said the ex-national player of “WAZ” on Tuesday. Despite numerous failures, Brandt had pushed the bench at BVB in the last few games. He is one of the sales candidates in the summer.

With Gnabry, Flick is missing another important player. The national coach already has to do without Niklas Süle, Leon Goretzka, Robin Gosens, Jonas Hofmann and Marco Reus. Of the original 26 nominees, Robin Koch (Corona positive) and the injured Karim Adeyemi had to cancel. Joshua Kimmich is to travel after the forthcoming birth of his third child.
