God of War Ragnarok: Discover the game’s best kept secret

Just like the first game in the series, God of War 2018, the second opus is full of easter eggs, secrets and winks scattered all over the world and in every corner of dialogue. The director of God of War RagnarokEric Williams, recently revealed a cameo that even the most discerning eye couldn’t have spotted.

SPOILER WARNING

The following information may spoil a good part of God of War Ragnarok, or even the end of the game! You have been warned!

Allfather

Eric Williams has indeed revealed thatOdin makes a cameo at the start of the game, but is almost impossible to spot unless you know exactly where to look.

Whereas Kratos and Atreus make their way by boat through Svartalfheim for the first time, a dwarf can be seen crossing the bridge above them, then bending down to spit in the water. Williams revealed that the dwarf is actually Odin, who is presumably keeping tabs on Kratos and Atreus.

Although the dwarf is relatively far away and only appears onscreen momentarily, you may notice facial features similar to those of Odin if you take a closer look.

The dwarf even seems to wear an eye patch, Odin’s trademark. This would also explain why the dwarf spits in the water: the gesture is probably directed at Kratos.

Odin everywhere, justice nowhere (warning, endgame spoilers!)

According to Eric Williams, Odin hides throughout God of War Ragnarok, using his abilities to impersonate others. And those who have finished the game know the big ending twist: Týr, the one you saved at the start of the game, is actually not the Norse god of war but Odin pretending to be him.

“I saw someone who finally figured it out the other night,” Williams says of one of Odin’s first clues that’s hidden in the subtitles. “When Odin as Týr speaks, there is no accent on the ‘Y’ in the subtitles.”

The devs had a blast hiding clues to the massive ending twist throughout the game, says Eric Williams:

“There are so many little clues. You know, the prison where you break [Tyr] ? If you go back, in that room, there’s like crow feathers in the corner. […] Even the stuff he says, like calling Freya “Frigg” […]“He laughs.

Have you spotted Odin pretending to be other characters during your game? Tell us your guesses in the comments!

Acclaimed by critics since its release on November 9, God of War Ragnarok continues to chain successes and has just broken a new record so far held by The Last of Us Part II.
