God of War Ragnarök: which display mode to choose on PS4 and PS5?


Optimized for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles, God of War Ragnarök offers several display modes. Which one to choose ? It all depends on your equipment.

Like most recent games, God of War Ragnarok, available since November 9 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, offers several display modes, which affect the quality of the image. There are so many that Santa Monica Studio has detailed them in a tweet posted on November 3.

On PlayStation 5, console on which God of War Ragnarok displays the best rendering, there are actually six options. However, they depend on your equipment: to have access to them, you must own a 4K UHD television equipped with an HDMI 2.1 port and equipped with the latest technologies.

God of War Ragnarök Offers Rendering Choices

I have a PS4

As far as the PS4 is concerned, there is only one option offered: it is based on a 1080p definition and a framerate of 30 fps. On this console, God of War Ragnarok runs correctly according to Kotaku (a feat for a platform that is approaching 10 years old). Nevertheless, you have to like the noise of the fan, as the PS4 blows hard.

I have a PS4 Pro

Two modes proposed here:

  • A first that promotes performance: dynamic definition (between 1080 and 1656p) and framerate at 30 fps unbridled;
  • A second that promotes quality: dynamic definition (between 1440 and 1656p) and framerate at 30 fps targeted.

Here, we can only encourage giving priority to performance, with regard to dynamic definitions. Unless you have robot eyes, navigating between 1080 and 1656p or between 1440 and 1656p shouldn’t be noticeable. On the other hand, the fluidity of the image is appreciated immediately.

I have a PS5

This is where things get complicated. As this table shows:

There is something to get lost in reading all this data. In reality, it is quite simple to choose, regardless of your equipment. As with the PS4 Pro, we recommend the performance-oriented mode. We tested all the options and the differences, in terms of graphic fidelity, are not obvious enough to recommend the mode focused on quality (admittedly in native 4K). DigitalFoundrya specialist in performance analysis, comes to the same conclusion: for the media, a game like God of War Ragnarokwhere the action is particularly frenetic, deserves a higher framerate – and the Quality mode does not create enough of a gap to prefer it.

Similarly, if you own a TV with an HDMI port (therefore compatible with 4K at 120 fps), do not hesitate to activate the HFR in the options. Unleashing the framerate makes it possible to reach 80/90 fps, for a very, very negligible sacrifice in quality – not to say imperceptible. After launching God of War Ragnarok in these conditions, you no longer want to go back: the increased fluidity improves comfort and, in fact, gives the impression that the game is more beautiful. The VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), to be checked in the PS5 settings (if your television is compatible), helps prevent screen tearing.

Note that an image that is too fluid can be annoying, especially if you are looking for a more cinematic experience. Feel free to experiment, knowing that it is very easy to switch from one mode to another from the options – without having to restart the game each time to confirm your choice.
